Extraordinárias - Mulheres que revolucionaram o Brasil
Extraordinary - Women who revolutionized Brazil. Publisher: Seguinte, 2018.

This book tells the stories of great women who fought for their ideals and inscribed their names in the history of Brazil. I was one of the artists invited to illustrate them, and it was a pleasure for me to learn more about these amazing revolutionaries that are often left out of the history books.

Since I was portraying women of different times and backgrounds, I took the opportunity to experiment with drawing and painting styles as well as various materials.

Maria Felipa de Oliveira was a black woman from the island of Itaparica who, armed with a fish knife and tree branches, fought against the Portuguese for the independence of Bahia in the 19th century.

Sônia Guajajara is a brazilian activist for indigenous rights and, in her own way, fights bravely for the survival and dignity of this population. Political activism is her weapon in this struggle of more than 500 years.

These two pieces were drawn in pencil over paper and then colored digitally.
Ana Néri's two sons and her brother were sent to fight in the War of Paraguay in 1864. She then applied to work as a nurse in military hospitals that treated wounded soldiers. In spite of losing one of her sons, she served until the end of the war and was highly honored and decorated.

Djamila Ribeiro is an activist, philosopher, writer and mother. She is one of the greatest voices of black feminism today, using the internet as a platform to make this debate more accessible.
Laudelina de Campos Melo was born a few years after the abolition of slavery and saw her mother, who was employed by the family that had owned her grandparents, suffer prejudice and abuse. She fought for the rights of the black population and also for domestic workers. Thanks to her efforts, this category was granted proper labor rights.

Margarida Maria Alves was a trade unionist and defender of human rights in Brazil. She filed more than one hundred labor claims on behalf of rural workers in Paraíba. After receiving numerous threats from local farmers, she was murdered in front of her home in a political crime that was never solved.
My work for his book resulted in a nomination for the Prêmio Jabuti de Ilustração—a very prestigious illustration award in Brazil—and I am forever grateful for everything I learned and achieved with this work.
